CURRENT EXHIBIT
By Design: Threads is a multi-media exhibit of objects and forms
that have been derived from threads of various materials such as
fabrics, metals and glass. Participating artists include: Sherri Cornett
of Billings, Maggy Rozycki Hiltner of Red Lodge, Julie Server of Miles
City and Charlotte Ziebarth of Boulder, Colorado. Sherri
Cornett’s installation is made up of life-sized sculptures, each of
which has a wooden core, welded steel rod exterior and a mix of other
media that are symbolic of the woman represented (fabric, yarn, books,
crochet hooks, cds, fishing rods, shotgun shells, a podium, maps, tools,
instruments...). Sheri’s sculptures are symbolic of women who have
mentored her either directly or through their work - her female
relatives, family friends, writers, artists and activists. Select
professional memberships and affiliations include the International
Sculpture Center, Art Student's League, MSU Billings, and Women's Caucus
for Art, College Art Association. Select exhibits include:
“Ancestresses & Wise Women”, Betty Feves Memorial Gallery, Blue
Mountain Community College, Pendleton, OR and Toucan Gallery, Billings;
“Strong Intuitions: Five Women's Perspectives”, The Shed
Exhibition Space at Level 504, Billings and the 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009
Small Works Auction, Yellowstone Art Museum, Billings. Maggy
Rozycki Hiltner hand-stitches images on found textiles and in many
cases, discarded household fabrics. Her imagery, while at first feeling
comfortable in its seemingly domestic familiarity, presents her personal
narratives that quickly reveal themselves to be much more subversive.
Hiltner’s artwork has been featured in numerous national publications
and in galleries and museums around the country. Recent exhibits
include: “Cruel Truths/ Kind Lies”, Toucan Gallery, Billings;
“Familiar Faces”, Tinlark Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; “Generously
Odd: Craft Now”, Lexington Art League, Lexington, KY and “Raised
In Craftivity”, Wignall Museum, Chaffey College, Rancho Cucamonga,
CA Ten years ago, Julie Server read a magazine article in a doctor’s office about fabric painting. Since that inspirational visit, she has been creating quilt art about the things she loves including birds, Christmas and fantasy. Julie is a self-taught quilter whose education comes from books, articles and on-line resources. Thread painting is her passion along with texture and shine, which are always reflected in her work. Julie recently opened Fabrications, a quilting store in Miles City. Charlotte Ziebarth creates digital imagery that is printed on fabric and assembled into quilt art. With thirteen years experience in Boulder’s Open Studios, Charlotte enjoys introducing people to the world of digital cloth. Widely exhibited and collected, she is known for her rich color usage and captivating nature imagery in her quilt/digital collage artwork. Although she has a background in academic psychology, she has worked with art and cloth all her life as a professional dyer, weaver, clothing designer, knitter, and quilter. Charlotte is the author of the award-winning book, Artistic Photo Quilts and has been featured in many magazines and books, including Quilting Arts Magazine, Quilt Life, 500 Art Quilts, and one of her quilts is the cover image for Quilt Visions 2008. |
